Back again

Aine is back in the ICU. This time after a planned "surgery" to close the skin on her chest. I was informed that the procedure was like putting sutures in a cut, so as long as things go the way everyone is hoping recovery will be good. But... As we all know, Aine is Aine & we can only hope for the best and not hold our breath.

She looks great and has been removed from the breathing tube, so that is better than the last couple of times. We will be spending at least tonight in the ICU, because as I said earlier - Aine is Aine and she has her own plan for life & does what she wants. (Man am I in for trouble :)

Liam is doing well, he is ready for Aine to come home and continues to ask me when we can take her. He however won't help me pick out a carseat, so I wonder if he knows that life is going to change.

Liam is doing great with his swimming and was given the option to move to the next class, but we felt due to age limitations of moving out of the next class we would keep him in the one he is in now. He is still in tumbling and loving it.

I can't believe how fast they are both growing.

I Will post pictures of them very soon!

Continuing to Continue

So,
A lot has happened since I was able to post last.
Aine was removed from the ventilator and sent up to the floor to finish recovering.
It was discovered that she had excess fluid on her lungs and that diaretics were the best course of action. The poor little girls body dumped too much sodium and she ended up back in the ICU :( for close monitoring.
She was able to level out her sodium levels the way that she is supposed to, but now she has to work on getting her neck, face, and diaper rash cleared up - along with getting rid of the infection, and work on growing (she is 3.1 kg - or - 6.82 pounds)
The wound on her chest is still open in the two places and they are continuing to clean it out three times a day.
As of this time she is remaining in the ICU to continue healing and we will be discussing the "next plan of attack" sometime soon.
We are hoping and praying that she will be able to come home soon, but don't have any guestimates at this time.

The road less traveled

Guess that's kinda how we feel lately. That we're taking the road less traveled. Poor Aine has undergone another procedure since they re-did her shunt. She came down with an infection and the surgeon felt it was best to go in surgically and remove the infection. He decided it best to leave part of the site open so that it can drain, which it is - so here's hoping that it continues to get better.
They were hoping to get her off of the ventilator tonight (Wed), but I don't know if that is going to happen or not. She is pretty sleepy & they are waiting for some blood gas tests to come back.
On the positive side, her color looks great and she can squeeze my finger.
Here's another prayer that she continues to get better and this blib and really nothing at all.

Monday

Today is not the day that our little princess will be moving graduating to 6th floor.
I was informed that she has an infection at her incision site so they have put her on anti-biotics and will be monitoring it.
She is also back on IV pain meds due to the infection and heavy breathing so this puts a damper on pulling the central line.
She is back on her high flow oxygen because she was dropping her oxygen saturation.
They stopped her feeds because she was able to vomit a small amount even with the nissen and will be restarting the feeds at a smaller amount this afternoon.
They took a chest x-ray to make sure nothing else is happening.

I'll let you know when I know more.

Blessed

As I sit in Aine's room looking out her window, I know that we are truely blessed to be where we are right now. We have a wonderful group of people looking after the well being of our daughter.
It really brings happy tears to my eyes seeing doctors take time out of their day to visit and play with the kids. It's good to see their fun side, not just their serious work side.

Sunday

Today things are going well.
Liam is back in swimming (they were closed last week due to memorial day), it was a sunny weekend, and Aine is looking at moving back up to the 6th floor.
She is doing well after having her shunt replaced on Thursday.
She is currently completely off oxygen (just breathing room air) and is holding her oxygen saturation where the doctors want it. Her heart rate is running higher than normal, but this could be because it is soo close to pre-op time. The good news is her blood pressure is looking good and her potassium livels are at a good rate. Her chest tubes were also pulled this morning - so we are down to just her central IV line and I don't know when that will be pulled.
We have not time frame for when she will be able to come home, but we are hoping that it will be sooner than later.

Saturday

Things are going well,
Aine has had her breathing tube pulled, 2 IV lines pulled, and has started to receive feeds afain. She isn't getting the full amount that she was getting before surgery, but she will get back to it soon.
They are talking about pulling her drainage tubes tomorrow and sending her back to the 6th floor on Monday!
She looks better than she has since birth and we couldn't be happier with how she is doing.

Friday 6/3

Well,
We're past our 12 hour post-surgery timeframe. :)
Aine is doing well, they still have her sedated but are going to try to wean her off of the ventilator by this afternoon.
They repaired the shunt that was originally placed and are waiting until she is bigger to repair the hole in her heart and fix the valve. They want her to get up to 6 kg before they proceed with another surgery. She was at 3.1 kg yesterday morning, so the surgerion is estimating she will be 6 kg (13.2 pounds) by the time she is a year old. At that time they will re-check the shunt and arteries to make sure nothing needs to be done with them.
The size thing really threw me for a loop because as many know, Liam was 9.7#'s at birth and doubled his weight within the first couple months.

Liam is being a trooper during all this. He wanted to help feed Aine yesterday and got very upset when I told him that she couldn't eat because she was having surgery. He told me that she told him she was hungry and I needed to give her water. He is such an amazing little boy - temper tantrums and all.

We are all doing our best to "hang in there" and will continue to update the blog as we get information. I can't upload pictures at the hospital, so when I go home I will try to add some.

Surgery Day

Well,
Aine went in for another open heart surgery today at about 3:00 pm. Her shunt was not open as it should be so she was not getting enough oxygen. So, they replaced the shunt that was orginally placed with a larger shunt. From what I understand, they left the rest of the heart alone (meaning she will need to have the hole repaired when she is older & possibly have a larger shunt placed).
It was a pretty scary ordeal and I do not want to go through that ever again!
We are at this time (9:00 pm) waiting for the Dr to come up and talk to us about the surgery and what to expect from this point on (future surgeries, recovery time, etc).
I will update you further when I have more information on our little princess as she is still in the operating room being monitored for bleeding.
